Lib-Dem march to annihilation

From: Alan Carcas, Cornmill Lane, Liversedge.

ALL the Lib Dem talk of a mansion tax, a land tax, and other wealth taxes, shows that they have no idea how, in a modern economy, such taxes, like inheritance tax, impinge on the middle classes, and the aspiring working class, all potential Lib Dem voters.

Division on this issue suggests the coalition won’t last the full term it has set itself, and I can see David Cameron calling the next General Election in 2013 – after a successful Olympic Games.

To paraphrase David Steel, another failed Lib-Dem leader, Clegg and Cable are saying to their MPs: “Go back to your constituencies and prepare for annihilation.”

Pop burst bubble

From: Mrs Mary Tyler, Highland Close, Pontefract.

IN REPLY to Ruthven Urquhart (Yorkshire Post, August 30), my husband and I met lots of lovely, helpful Scottish people during our weekend in Edinburgh recently.

However, one place we will not visit again is the little café near the castle, which charged us £5.40 for two cans, one Diet Coke and one lemonade.

I was so taken aback I paid up, after querying it and being told the price was correct. Then, on our way back from Edinburgh, we called in at Gretna Green where we had a wonderful latté and hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows for a total of £5.20, which went a long way to restoring our faith in the Scots.

Kennedy quote

I REFER to the letter of Dennis Johnson (Yorkshire Post, August 26) in which he invites his readers to “remember the words of JFK – ask not what your country can do for you ... etc”.

Whenever these words are quoted it is implied that President Kennedy originated them. They were actually written by Kahlil Gibran, a Lebanese mystic who was resident in the US.

This quotation, among many others, is carved upon a bench in the Kahlil Gibran Memorial Garden in Washington DC.
