The Liberals should speak

From: Max Nottingham, St Faith’s Street, Lincoln.

THE coalition has a typical Tory attitude to people at the bottom of the pile: ignore them or penalise them.

Most of the coverage of the so-called Welfare Bill seems to suggest that massive change is better than sensible change.

I suppose there is a chance that changes will be made as the bill goes through Parliament because the disabled and young mums seem to be getting a raw deal.

It may all depend on whether Liberal MPs find the courage to speak up. Come on, Vince Cable, you can do it.

Key to locks

From: Colin Spiller, Fairfax Road, Bingley.

IT was very interesting to see the “From the Archive” photo (Yorkshire Post, February 25) of the canal barge entering the locks at Bingley in 1974, as we purchased one of the houses in the background in 1977.

I was very surprised to see that Robert Brough, of Bradford Council, thinks (March 10) that this is the Three-Rise locks. It is clear to anyone who knows the area that this is, as you originally wrote, the Five-Rise locks.

THANK you Stephanie Smith (Yorkshire Post, March 1) for writing such a joyfully graphic description of the stars at the Oscars. The incisive report made me laugh out loud especially the difficulties of wearing red at the ceremony, and Melissa Leo’s designer dress “looking as if it had been fashioned from a heap of crumpled doilies”. Wonderful!

Gas figures

From: D Laycock, Aire Crescent, Crosshills.

WITH reference to Mr Holland’s letter (Yorkshire Post, February 25), does he have any figures to tell us how much hydrogen could be produced by one turbine running on an average day, for the windfarm electrolysis of water, also how this would be handled and stored?
