Lifting lid on council that doesn’t care for my town

From: Peter Hyde, Driffield, East Yorkshire.

I WONDER why Driffield is treated as the poor relation of East Riding Council? The council has spent a great deal of money resetting the cobbles and making Beverley marketplace safe for pedestrians. It spent a great deal of our cash around the Spa complex at Bridlington.

Try getting it to spend money in Driffield – no way.

Some months ago I had a fall over a sunken Yorkshire Water access lid in Middle Street North, Driffield.

As an octogenarian I was rather badly shaken, but managed not to spill the fish and chips I was carrying.

The next week I telephoned the council’s highways department. Later that week I received a telephone message from a female member of staff telling me that there was no such thing as the area had been recently inspected.

Following this conversation I was somewhat cross and telephoned to arrange a meeting. At the site meeting she then agreed it was dangerous but pointed out that it was Yorkshire Water who were responsible.

I, in turn, pointed out that the council had a duty to ensure the roads were safe, which she accepted and assured me that the matter would be carefully monitored.

A few days later blue paint appeared round the offending metal lid. I wrote to the local newspapers, hoping that a letter would have some effect, but alas no. To date, it remains unfixed.
