Lockdown advice has been clear to OAPs; respect it – Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Lorna Macdonald, Holmfirth.

I WAS dismayed to read comments that the Covid guidance was woolly. I completely disagree. As soon as we were told what the medical scientists advised the Government, I went into wartime mode.

I did exactly what I was asked to do without hesitation or moaning. Bought masks, disposable gloves and sanitizer. Even made some lined washable masks for family and friends.

In some similarities like wartime but much worse in that Covid an invisible medical killer, putting everyone in danger.

We didn’t have to wear masks then but we had to carry our gas masks everywhere – even when we went out to play. Also rushing into the Anderson shelters whether you were claustrophobic or not. Worse still was the real austerity with no benefits, NHS or electricity and rationing.

No TV to keep us informed, just newspapers, radio and cinema newsreels, but we just got on with it and no one complained. I am sure that my generation are coping with this much better than younger age groups because we’ve been there.

Neither can I fault the Government for keeping me informed by letter and phone what I have to do to keep safe, where to apply for assistance with shopping or anything else I am unable to do if isolating. So I think the guidance is very clear.

ON Thursday I had my first Covid jab at the York mass vaccination centre. I was a little concerned because the previous day there were reports of chaos at the centre.

But, to the credit of all involved, these problems had been resolved, and I was in and out within 30 minutes. A really efficient process by doctors, nurses, members of the Armed Forces and volunteers. Thank you all so much.

YOU make much of the controversy you have confected around the supply of vaccines (The Yorkshire Post, January 23).

Why are you surprised that the vaccine supplies are being moved around to meet the stated and reasonable objective of inoculating the most vulnerable groups first? It would be irresponsible not to.

THE reopening of schools is all very well – but only when all the staff are vaccinated should the children be allowed to return.
