March 19 letters: Clarkson’s talents clear to see despite storm

I THINK it is inaccurate to suggest that Jeremy Clarkson’s talents (Jayne Dowle, The Yorkshire Post, March 16) are unworthy of comment. I watched both his presentation of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and a documentary on the Arctic Convoys. In my view, both were first class.

So far as Top Gear is concerned, a car has a wheel at each corner, a badge, various engines, colours and body styles and to make a programme each week just about cars could easily become stale. Clearly, Captain Slow, the Hamster and the Baboon know this so they present the kind of antics that both entertain and at times whet the appetites of viewers.

To suggest that the audience are petrol-head sycophants is derisory and misses the point. Petrol-heads they may be but many will have various interests in motor sport, although few will have the opportunity to put very expensive cars through the paces that the TG team have. I enjoy watching the programme and also the banter between the presenters.

I imagine a star in a reasonably priced car brings variety into the life of a long-suffering “partner” of a petrol-head so in the matter of a steak in a five-star Yorkshire hotel, both Jeremy and the BBC have created a storm on a dinner plate!
