Margaret Thatcher would have made mincemeat out of Michel Barnier: Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Terry Watson, Adel.

MARGARET Thatcher would not have allowed Britain to become bogged down negotiating Brexit for four years.

She would have made mincemeat out of Michel Barnier and his cronies. They are making fools of our negotiators with their ridiculous demands.

Boris Johnson has threatened to walk away with no deal so many times that he has lost all credibility. Now the French want 10 years of unfettered access to our fishing grounds and Barnier says Britain can have a slight increase in our catches. These are our waters they are talking about. Get a grip Boris,  they have more to lose than we have.

WHEN the UK government agreed ‘Let the public vote’ the criteria was Leave or Remain  – there was no mention of a deal.

Four years later, they are still arguing the toss, thanks to Theresa May, a Remainer at heart, dithering and bowing to the EU for three years. Some people forget (or choose to ignore) the fact that the  EU, whilst raking in untold billions, want us to dance to their tune with any deal!

I DON’T know what – in the minds of the EU – a level playing field means, but wanting 80 per cent of the fish from UK waters and any disputes decided by (their) courts doesn’t seem very level to me. When we joined in 1973, it was the EEC (European Economic Community) which was fine for trade. When it changed to the EU in 1992, we should have pulled out. We have not been able to decide anything without EU permission since then. The British fishing fleet was destroyed by the EU. Our fishermen were not allowed to take fish from our own waters.

Sir Keir Starmer told Prime Minister’s Questions that Labour will vote on any Brexit deal in “the national interest” – not on party lines.

Both Britain and Labour’s mutual interest would be best served by not voting at all. Abstaining will mean Boris Johnson has enough Conservative support to get a deal through the House of Commons. Such a compliant main opposition party is not in the national interest. What the country desperately needs is a clear and credible alternative to a failing government.
