Marina plan threatens wildlife far from town

From: David Wharton, Whitehorse Yard, Whitby.

JOE Shute’s article (Yorkshire Post, May 26) about the warning over the bid for the marina in Whitby was welcome in bringing Scarborough Borough Council’s plans to enlarge Whitby Marina to the public’s attention.

Unfortunately, the picture accompanying the article was of Whitby’s harbour and not of the proposed site in the upper regions of the beautiful River Esk. This area is far removed from the busy town and is rich in all forms of wild and plant life.

Filey councillor Mike Cockerill, head of the Whitby Harbour Board, flippantly stated that for the idea to go ahead “we will have to down a few worms” (Yorkshire Post, September 2011). It makes me wonder what some people know about life, intelligent life.

One of our two local councillors on the Harbour Board, Sandra Turner, has asked that the public should be involved, but it is now a year since the plan was proposed and still the public’s involvement seems a long way away.

THE article by Alex Wood (Yorkshire Post, May 27) regarding Bridlington cruisers brought back happy childhood memories of family holidays in the mid-1930s.

For several years we would spend a week there and greatly enjoyed trips to Flamborough Head on our favourite cruiser May Morn. The Yorkshireman, a Hull steam tug was another boat providing trips out into Bridlington bay. It always gave a blast on its steam siren a few minutes before departure that terrified my younger brother. A two-hour fishing trip was another treat but always on Monica 11 skippered by Nat (Nathaniel) who greeted us on the harbour approach road claiming to remember us from previous years.
