Monkey business

From: Andrew Kirby, Burn Road, Scunthorpe.

REGARDING Mark Stuart’s article “If you pay peanuts you get monkeys as MPs” (Yorkshire Post, August 19), I think the expenses scandal show us that if we pay more peanuts we get bigger monkeys.

From SB Oliver, Churchill Grove, Heckmondwike.

MARK Stuart should be aware that bigger peanuts will often attract both bigger and greedier “monkeys” as well, with banking and politics having recently proved it.

THE picture of the artist Joe Pighills (Yorkshire Post, August 15) brought back pleasant memories for me.

In the early 1940s, we were both members of the Haworth Home Guard. I was waiting for my “call-up” and Joe was too old to get his.

He gave me a print from a woodcut picture he had made of Haworth Church, that I still treasure. He was a kind, gentle, generous and talented man who was a pleasure to know.

A change of address

From: Peter R Hyde, Kendale View, Driffield.

WILL someone tell me why, after all these years, the Post Office and our local hospitals insist on my address being Driffield, North Humberside?

My bank has managed to accept that if they send anything to me addressed to North Humberside I shall not be best pleased so why can’t the rest of the world accept that Humberside no longer exists and that I live in the East Riding of Yorkshire?

Marriage lines

From: David Boocock, Ambaston Road, Hornsea.

THAT was a very nice photo of the Duchess of Cambridge on your front page (Yorkshire Post, August 20). However, the headline was “Duchess of Cambridge and husband visit victims of rioting”.

Is she married to someone famous?
