Motorists on phone while driving can be traced

From: Sue Cuthbert, Newton on Rawcliffe, North Yorkshire.

WHY is it that some drivers still think that they are above the law regarding using a hand held phone when driving their car?

Midday on Thursday, July 25, I parked my car next to Pickering Station. Just before I walked away, a large car drove alongside and started to back into the space in front of my car. The driver was driving and talking on his mobile phone.

He made this manoeuvre with one hand so, as he was very close to my car, I watched in case he hit it. Fortunately he didn’t, so I continued walking into Market Street.

I could hear this driver behind me still talking on his phone. When he stopped, I turned round and politely asked him if he always used his phone when driving.

He said “Are you a police officer?” I replied no. He then told me that it was none of my business that he was talking on his phone and driving. I said you are breaking the law by doing so. His attitude was rather rude and arrogant and he asked me if I had nothing better to do than watch him and question him. He then told me that he was very busy and had just employed four people. So what? He didn’t seem to be bothered by what he had done.

I wondered, if he had backed into my car and damaged it unseen by anyone, would he have stopped and left his details?

I doubt it.

This man’s attitude is symptomatic of so many people today – a lack of concern and consideration for others. I just hope that he never hurts or kills someone by his selfish attitude.

I have since been informed that, had I taken his registration number and noted the time of this incident, the police could have checked that he was driving and using his mobile phone. Please note all those people who continue to drive and talk/text. You can be found.
