Move government offices to decentralise nation

From: Don Burslam, Elm Road, Dewsbury Moor, Dewsbury.

I’VE just been watching a very interesting debate on the dreadful housing situation in London. Well, your readers might say, what has that to do with us and our problems up here?

Let me explain. The one fact that stands out a mile is that London is far too large. It has been allowed to mushroom to monstrous proportions at the expense of the regions.

In my submission, it is the gross over-centralisation of government of which both parties are guilty but Labour is particularly fond. The lavishing of yet more funds on the Olympics shows that the policy is alive and well.

We are the most centralised of all the developed nations and it is high time there was an all-party acceptance of the need to redistribute many government offices to the regions; there has been some movement but far too little. Wholesale movement would provide a much-needed boost to local economies and relive some pressure on the capital.

To anyone who visits London, the sheer numbers are staggering. Many of the public services seem to be on the verge of passing the point of efficient management. Let us hope for the sake of Yorkshire and London alike that there is soon a belated acceptance of the inevitable.
