MP McIntosh’s fall risks split in Tory vote at next election

From: Martin E Simons, Granard Avenue, London.

HAVING in the past lived in Stokesley, North Yorkshire, part of the Richmond constituency, worked on Teeside and having been generously invited to enjoy the local social life, I continue to take great interest in developments in the North East of England.

The deselection of Anne McIntosh will have wider implications for more than just the Thirsk and Malton constituency.

It would be ironic if a “fruit cake” Ukip candidate managed to slide into the seat at the next election.

Some of us who have been voting Conservative are getting ever more irritated by the
bloody mindedness of dissenting right-wing Conservatives and
now disloyal members such
as these.

These elements are not electable to government on their own merit.

You also risk the danger of losing votes from the left wing of the Conservative party to the Liberal Democrats, both locally and nationally.

Surely Yorkshire should have able female Conservative MPs?

I CANNOT say I am sorry at Anne McIntosh’s demise. The Tory party both in this constituency, and others, should concentrate on selecting suitable candidates for those areas. This means nobody with huge egos or voracious appetite for self- advancement. We have just had that.

A suitable candidate for this constituency should also be truthful with the electorate and be prepared to go against the party leadership when this is in the interest of their constituents.

Finally, a healthy scepticism of all things EU. No professional politicians, celebs or lawyers need apply as the electorate have had enough of their smoke and mirrors and look where it got us.

From: Malcolm Hanson, Southolme Walk, Boroughbridge.

SO the Malton, Thirsk and Filey Conservative Association has finally got its way and deselected Anne McIntosh. I would suggest that they remember the old saying which goes something like “better the Devil that you know than the one that you don’t know”. I would further suggest that they may have let in the Ukip candidate or, even better still, an Independent candidate (if she stands as such) at the next election in 2015.

I WAS sorry, but not surprised to read that Anne McIntosh has lost out in her fight to retain her seat for this great Parliamentary constituency. Good luck to Anne, I am sure she will continue working hard, for the country as well as for Malton and Thirsk.

MAY I as a complete outsider make a few observations on the Anne McIntosh matter?

I am a frequent viewer of Parliament and political programmes and I have formed the view that Miss McIntosh is above the average in ability compared with the run of the other MPs. I sympathise with her but may I say that in view of the evidently entrenched position of the antis it might be just as well for another MP to pick up the torch.

I would express the hope the House of Lords may benefit from the talents of this lady. This would certainly neatly crown a not unsuccessful career.

From: Mike Ridgway, Ghyll Wood, Ilkley.

IN view of the impossible situation both Anne McIntosh MP and the Thirsk and Malton Conservative Association have got themselves into over this issue of de-selection, the voters in the constituency should have the opportunity of deciding the outcome.

From: The Inmans, Scotton, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.

We say no, no, no to de-selecting Anne McIntosh. She is one of the best – you will never ever get another MP as good as she is.

I SEE that Anne McIntosh now plans to stand as an Independent.

She of course realises that this will split the Conservative vote three ways thus allowing the dribbly Libs in, as I do not see disgruntled Conservatives voting anything but Ukip or Liberal if they do not fancy her or the official prospective Conservative MP.

From: CG Boddy, Springfield Lane, Kirkbymoorside, York.

REGARDING Anne McIntosh’s struggle to be re-selected as this area’s prospective candidate, when the boundaries were
quite recently changed the Ryedale MP at the time, John Greenway, was not selected to
be a candidate.

Miss McIntosh won the seat, now she is facing the same fate as Mr Greenway. Is there a shadowy figure waiting in the wings? Not Boris I hope!

IN view of the impossible situation, the voters in the constituency should have the opportunity of deciding the outcome.

The national Conservative Party should therefore hold an “open primary” of all electors and let them decide... the matter
would then be finalised once and for all and all recriminations would end.
