MPs can’t even dress to impress

From: John Watson, Hutton Hill, Leyburn.

TOM Richmond has struck gold about the behaviour of MPs at Question Time in the House of Commons (Yorkshire Post, February 22).

When I was a child, my MP would be clad mostly in black and carrying an umbrella. I know it is an anachronism but the image demanded the utmost respect. It would be difficult, with one or two exceptions, to find that sort of respect in the present crowd. C’est la vie!

RE the article by Joanne Ginley on the new generation of lifeboats (Yorkshire Post, February 22),

The boat is propelled by the water jets powered by the engine, in a similar way that your car is propelled by the wheels which are powered by the engine.

Taking it further, when you walk you are propelled by your feet which are powered by your muscles. The lifeboat is not powered by the water jets. A very interesting article nevertheless.

Let’s be fair to the risk takers

From: Derek Brooks, Bailiff Bridge, Brighouse.

JEFF Boot of Leeds talks about “fairness” and how it ought to apply more to the implied “vulnerable” in society (Yorkshire Post, February 24).

Jeff’s justification for his claims is that there is a vast number of so-called “rich” (certainly some like the “aristocratic” Clegg) who are all getting “fat” on so much money coming their way, and we are all suffering as a consequence.

Although there are undoubtedly some in every society who flaunt wealth and do little to contribute, most high earners – and I am certainly not one myself – have got there through, perhaps, running a business, employing people and taking huge risks, from which most of us would cower.
