Need for party that will stand up for the middle classes

From: Tony Marcus, Moor Lane, Leeds.

YOU sometimes feel that you’re the last person on earth after Armageddon, until you read an article such as “We just want to be proud to be English again” by GP Taylor (Yorkshire Post, August 6).

Mr Taylor hits the nail well and truly on the head and I agree with every word of his article.

Although a 64-year-old Conservative voter, I am appalled at David Cameron’s obsession with foreign aid while English residents are suffering so badly. Some will say that it is impossible to compare the starving children in Africa with the problems currently being faced by the UK population. However, while we are asked to send aid to help the starving in Africa, their leaders grow rich on stealing the wealth of those countries and stashing it safely abroad, buying up millions of pounds of property assets in Europe for instance. We are asked to give while other rich African countries give nothing.

Surely the time has come, where responsible European governments take back these stolen assets and redistribute them to the people they have been stolen from?

We are continually asked to give aid money to the likes of India and Pakistan, military powers with armies and nuclear capabilities, but we do nothing to deal with maniacs like Mugabe in Zimbabwe, a Commonwealth country, where he is committing genocide. We continue to spend millions fighting useless wars we cannot win, however no one ever mentions the care homes in the UK, which are closing and elderly who are neglected, because we have no funds, problems in hospitals and children who leave school illiterate.

Do the same bleeding hearts who speak so eloquently on starving Africa, ever talk with the same passion about our own people who are suffering?

I often daydream of forming the One Day Party. A political party which would only be in power for one day, but with all the powers necessary to stand up and change the injustices for the hard hit, hard working and decent middle classes.

From: Terry Duncan, Greame Road, Bridlington.

I AM one who has a marvellous Scottish wife, who is also a mother, stretching back 47 years, who has been hard working all her life and is an expert on domestic economics and the handling of a pension scheme, and who saw our three children through university/college without milking the taxpayer.

Today we are reasonably lucky, and now have two small, smashing grand-daughters.

All of us came from the working class, no silver spoons.

May it not be a very good idea if the rest of the UK went it alone? Cut off our ties with mainland Europe and the US, and get all the people of this country, the unemployed, the scroungers and the rest of us working in one Great British Company to build, to cultivate, to manufacture and be self-sufficient.

Then we would be a great nation once again without reliance on foreigners, ie the owners of banks, the City investors, as well as interference from Eurocrats and the big so-called US of A.

Let’s be Great Britain again, and set up our own parameters.
