Negative spin on success story

From: Bev Wilkinson, White Grove, Roundhay, Leeds.

YOUR business pages greeted us with the headline “Tesco reeling as it endures worst UK sales for 20 years” (Yorkshire Post, October 6).

On digging down we found that UK sales had slipped by 0.9 per cent (unsurprising in difficult times at home) but owing to its foresight to expand into Asia, the underlying group profits were 12 per cent to almost £2bn in just six months.

My suggested headline would be “Tesco reels in record profits thanks to Asian expansion”.

Please treat us with a little more intelligence and replace cheap sensational negativity with a little objectivity when reporting company results.

I’M not surprised Tesco’s profits were disappointing – the store’s customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

How about employing some cashiers rather than machines?

Vulcan facts and fictions

I AM delighted to hear that it is hoped that the last flying Avro Vulcan bomber will be kept in the air next year (Yorkshire Post, October 6).

However, I must question the statement that “..the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales and Prince Michael of Kent have all piloted the plane”.

I do not believe this statement to be accurate in any of the three cases.

I WAS reading the article on Vulcan XH558 (Yorkshire Post, October 6) and noted that it stated that the aircraft was innovative in having powered controls and anti-lock brakes.

I was a navigator in the late 1940s flying on Lancaster ASR3s and I am sure that we had anti-lock brakes,. This was achieved by having Maxeret units fitted.

Perhaps my memory has failed – are there any engineers out there who can remember these units?
