CHRISTINE Ingledew (The Yorkshire Post, January 21) says dog owners should be registered in order that they pay towards emptying litter bins into which they have put their dog’s faeces.

Leaving aside the fact that very many dog owners (myself included) put the bags of waste into their own bins when they arrive home after a walk, where would Ms Ingledew draw the line?

How about registering all smokers, all who have snack wrappers, all who have any kind of litter for the bins so that they, too, can be charged?

Her suggestion would only encourage more people just to leave the faeces on the pavement or wherever it has been deposited.

Litter-bin emptying is already paid for out of the council tax charges, to which dog owners and everybody else contribute.

Far better for Ms Ingledew to complain about those who collect their dog’s faeces in a bag but then just leave the bag in situ – or those who do not clear up after their dogs at all.

I AGREE – dog owners should pay a levy to fund council warden services and those who have to clean up the mess left behind by their pets.
