In the interview by Rob Parsons with Councillor Don Mackenzie of North Yorkshire County Council (The Yorkshire Post, November 7), no mention was made about the protracted closure of the A19 from Eggborough to Chapel Haddlesey, North Yorkshire, from February 2020 to June/July 2021 due to flood damage.

The A19 is one of the two main arteries connecting the North East of the country. Although the Covid-19 lockdown caused some delay in March, we despair of the length of time it is taking to repair a short stretch of a major highway, causing loss of income to businesses and transport forced to use alternative routes, adding miles and time to their journeys.

Also people living locally have to find alternative, longer routes. This combines to put additional pressure on minor local roads, not built to carry so much traffic, and adding to the burden of pollution.

The same stretch of road was closed for some time in the winter of 2018/2019 for essential bridge repairs. Was flood damage not considered at that time?

Why was this disruption to lives and livelihoods overlooked in your article which only mentioned a short closure to a B road instead? We assume that the south of North Yorkshire has been overlooked once again.
