November 17: The lure to workers of generous benefits in UK

LISTENING to the debate on EU workers receiving benefits in this country reminded me that this situation is not a new problem. Some years ago, prior to retirement, I was asked to help an unemployed builder move to Germany where there was a shortage of labour in the building industry.

It quickly became apparent that the financial support he was receiving in the UK would not be available in Germany.

I was informed that the benefits in the EU were reciprocal and you only receive the level of benefit that is paid within the country you move to.

This explains why the UK with its very generous benefit system and free healthcare has long queues of workers and immigrants from outside the EU waiting to enter the UK.

LET’S face it, why should “call me Dave” want to leave the 
EU? He was educated and brought up in the way of the EU lifestyle – lavish lunches, sumptuous suppers, posturing on the world stage.

What’s not to like ? If 
anyone thinks that David Cameron is going to give this up easily, they are living in cloud cuckoo land.
