November 17: Not enough heed given to terror threats

I AM in no doubt that all our thoughts this week are with the victims of the Paris attacks, 
who lost their lives to the cowardly actions of barbarian infiltrators.

The international solidarity in response has been tremendous and will hopefully help the affected families to find solace at this time.

It is a regrettable fact that we had forewarning of this.

The barbarians publicly threatened to masquerade as refugees and cross to Europe on the people traffickers’ boats to carry out their plots against Western civilization.

These threats were not taken seriously enough.

In due course we will 
need extensive debate on 
how we can discharge our humanitarian duties without causing people who already live here to suffer and fear for their safety.

ONE lesson from the Paris atrocities is the need for proper border and other immigration controls.

It is clear that for the foreseeable future the main European countries must re-introduce full border controls.

In the current circumstances, the Schengen vision of a borderless Europe is not simply dead but deadly.

Another lesson is to remind us that the very first duty of the state is provide security for its people.

That duty falls firmly on the individual European states and not on the Brussels bureaucracy, which is both legally and psychologically incapable of protecting us.

A key part of that duty is to vet all people entering their territory to filter out those with hostile intent.

Furthermore, our own security in Europe will have to take priority in our dealings with the wave of migrants from the Middle East and Muslim Africa. Those who don’t share our values will have to be barred entry to Europe.

THIS latest terrorist massacre in Paris shows that a piecemeal approach to tackling the 
‘Islamic State’ (IS) is not 
working.

Where will they strike next London, Berlin, Barcelona, Rome or even America?

Europe imposed sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine egged on by America.

Now countries want to ban Russia from athletics over an alleged doping scandal.

These tantrums are irrelevant in today’s terrorist climate where Muslim zealots are determined to conquer the West.

A LETTER (The Yorkshire Post, November 14) considering a 
deal with Hitler’s fascist 
regime to end the Second 
World War was questionable, 
but to compare the fascist 
regime with some elements of the EU was completely off the wall.

A regime that allowed 
the imprisonment and murder of millions of Jews in concentration camps bears no comparison whatsoever with the EU.

The day Britain does deals with such regimes is the day
we will not be fit to read the words on our war memorials and the day we will also have thrown away every vestige of humanity.

THE demise of ‘Jihadi John’ has been generally welcomed, 
and rightly so. The world is certainly a better place 
without him, however he was eliminated.

But Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn says it would have been “far better” if he had been brought to justice in the courts (The Yorkshire Post, November 14). Well, that may be a wonderful ideal, but perhaps Mr Corbyn could enlighten us all as to just how that should have been achieved without risking the loss of many innocent people.

One day maybe Mr Corbyn would like to join the rest of us the real world?

HAVING listened to the BBC’s Any Questions? on the radio, I have never heard so many opinions advocating appeasement over the Paris massacre, some even placing the blame on our past history of colonialism.

The jihadists in IS have only one aim in mind and that is total domination by Islam over the whole world. We have never had an adversary which is so inhumane, barbaric and brutal as IS.

They are even at war with their own kin because they cannot agree on some of the history of the Islamic faith, and woe betide anyone who is not a follower of that faith – we are all infidels.

Saddam Hussein and Colonel Gaddafi were the devils incarnate but at least there was no extremism in their countries as there is today. Have we jumped from the frying pan into the fire?

Poppies and remembrance

REFERENCE Mrs Wolfe (The Yorkshire Post, November 12), I bought a poppy brooch because it was well made, unobtrusive, and easily fixed in position, unlike a “proper poppy”.

However, the makers had astutely dated it 2015, so that I could not use it next year even if I wanted to. Well thought out Royal British Legion!

WITH reference to Mrs Wolfe’s letter regarding those people who wear a poppy brooch, having bought a poppy which was blown off by a gusty wind blast, I am glad to know that my donation will go to a good cause.

Poppy brooches will last for many a year and the people who have them will wear them with pride year after year and donate accordingly.

We will remember.
