October 27: The great British sell-off has left us powerless

From: Paul Hill, Lancaster.

I HAVE just returned from holiday to a nation that appears to be bankrupt, this after we, the taxpayer , bailed out the banks by means of “Quantitative Easing”.

I worked at Windscale/Sellafield for 20 years where we once had eight nuclear reactors of four different designs working. We led the world in nuclear power generation. Now we are told that we need the Chinese and the French. This is madness, power generation on our soil in foreign control.

Now it is the steel industry’s turn to bite the dust, in fact most of our vital manufacturing belongs to foreign-based companies. Take a long look at the powerhouse of EuropeGermany. A true powerhouse. Why? Because its government did not allow strategic German companies to fall into the hands of foreign owners.

The German way is just common sense. Unlike ourselves, they haven’t sold the family silver.

In reality the land of hope and glory is left with a service economy and a ever diminishing manufacturing and construction industry. A service economy without construction and manufacturing cannot be sustained.
