Olympic gold for the ticket touts

From: David Quarrie, Lynden Way, Acomb, York.

THE Government and the police are now warning possible ticket touts who try to sell on 2012 Olympic tickets, that if caught, they face fines of £20,000.

Because the method chosen by the UK Olympic Committee to sell tickets was so complicated, something like 1.2m applicants did not receive any tickets.

The not surprising net result is that ticket touts will somehow get hold of many tickets and due to demand out swelling supply, they will find customers.

The whole ticket sales operation has been a farce and a fiasco.

Our buildings and stadiums may well be on time, but our ticket policy is a nightmare.

THE mandatory deposit scheme for beverage packaging that has been proposed would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would be funded by new taxes on consumers and on business (Yorkshire Post, July 6).

Increasing kerbside collection and promoting on the go collection for recycling would be much more efficient and would also create many new jobs in their own right.

Working in partnership with local authorities and community groups is a much better way of fighting litter than the regulation and taxes that mandatory deposits would bring with them.

Money pit

From: Peter R Hyde, Driffield, East Yorkshire.

I HAVE always thought that the European Union was a pit in which to pour money. Anyone with a modicum of common sense could have seen that including Greece and Ireland would be foolish as they were waiting for others to bail them out.

Who will come to bail us out when David Cameron has given all our money away to other countries?
