Parents penalised for farming education

From: Bill Cowling, Honorary Show Director, Great Yorkshire Show.

THE Yorkshire Post is to be applauded for championing the need to connect young people with farming as part of their education. It is in everyone’s interest that youngsters know where their food comes from and the important role that British, and in particular Yorkshire farmers play in putting food on the table.

As the show director of the country’s premier agricultural event, the Great Yorkshire Show, it is particularly concerning that this aim is being hampered by the decision of many schools – as directed by the Government – to penalise parents from bringing their families to shows such as ours with the threat of fines.

Where else can youngsters see the finest livestock, the latest agricultural technology plus vital country skills such as sheep shearing, dry stone walling and horse shoeing – and all in one place?

Yes, much can be learnt from books and the internet, but as we all know, there is nothing quite like seeing something for yourself for it to have a lasting impact. At present the message is that agricultural shows are of no more educational value than say a beach holiday.

We will be inviting Mr Gove to the Great Yorkshire Show to see its educational worth for himself.
