Poorest lose out on special offers

From: D Downs, Mountbatten Avenue, Sandal, Wakefield.

I AM sure that many readers have noticed the increase in three-for-two and similar offers on basic essentials while shopping in our supermarkets. The benefits to shoppers can be relatively substantial.

How can this method of marketing benefit producers when we purchase their products on less frequent occasions? But, what is more concerning is the effect on the less fortunate in society, whose incomes will not allow them to purchase more than one item at a time and therefore have to pay the premium rate. This brings us back to the time when the less well-off were paying the highest rates for their gas and electricity through pre-payment meters.

This method of marketing cannot be conducive with the aims of the Big Society.

Judges must stay silent

From: Terry Duncan, Greame Road, Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

It is time judges got back to basics and recalled their oath. This country has an elected Parliament which is there to make the laws of the country.

It is time the judges get on with their jobs of jailing and fining and cease expressing their own views. If not, they will lose all respect of the country. Do they think it is correct to protect the multi-million pound stars, be it from television, sport, politics or film, with injunctions when they are held up as role models?

These are the same people who get their money from the fans and then let them down by secretly abusing the standards of life.

Heart case

From: Arthur Quarmby, Holme, West Yorkshire.

HERE is another good reason why the heart unit should stay in Leeds, rather than be transferred to either Liverpool or Newcastle. The population of Yorkshire is 5.18 million, whereas the population of Lancashire is only 1.4 million. To move it so far away from an area of such high demand is a nonsense.
