IT is commonplace to criticise public transport providers when their service fails, for whatever reason, to meet the expectations of passengers.

Coronavirus in Yorkshire: Leeds Bradford Airport needs to clean up its act

Equally the reverse should be true when operators do go above – and beyond – the call of duty to assist communities in their hour of need.

This is particularly applicable to the four bus operators – Coastliner, York and Country, The Harrogate Bus Company and The Keighley Bus Company – who are supporting all those who have volunteered to help those who are having to live in isolation as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As groups of volunteers come together, particularly in rural areas, to collect – and deliver – food,
medicine and vital
supplies to the elderly, vulnerable and those without support, they will offer free transport on the buses.

And, before critics and cynics say that public transport is not advised because of the risk of being infected with coronavirus, and passing on the disease to others, these operators are putting in place strict new cleanliness regimes – including extra cleaning and valeting of their vehicles during the day – as they go the extra mile in this crisis.

Recognition about the importance of such networks in remote rural areas where social isolation was a pressing issue long before this virilent virus took hold, it is also a reminder that this country’s entire mindset is going to have to change when it comes to cleanliness. It means the operators of buses, trains and airports setting a good example – and also passengers being more considerate of their fellow travellers.
