Profits from UK work go abroad

From: Douglas Hartley, Irving Terrace, Clayton, Bradford.

MICHAEL Meadowcroft (Yorkshire Post, July 26) states that workers in this country will not be made redundant following the failure of Bombardier to secure the contract for rail carriages. He tells us that Siemens has 13 UK factories producing 2,000 additional jobs in the North East.

The jobs may go to British workers, but the profits will go to Germany, helping Siemens’ further expansion. Siemens’ success is another blow to British manufacturing, dealt by our EU-compliant government.

Apparently the French government at least tried to disobey the EU procurement ruling. I doubt that many factories in Germany are British-owned.

Conflict that we cannot win

From: Peter R Hyde, Driffield.

HOW many more of our young men and women are to be killed before we withdraw from the unwinnable war in Afghanistan?

The government there is as corrupt as can be and when we finally see sense and leave them to it, the situation will revert to what it was before Tony Blair dragged us into following the US. The death of our troops has become so commonplace as to barely merit a mention on the news. Victoria couldn’t change matters there and neither could the Russian Bear so why do our foolish leaders think we can?

Let’s get out now and use our ever-dwindling military to defend our own shores from those attempting to enter Britain illegally.

Give old cinema to rescue group

THERE was a report recently (Yorkshire Post, July 20) of the compulsory purchase by Kirklees Council of Pioneer House in Dewsbury “to protect the building from further decay”.

Here in Bradford, the council – whose leader is quoted as saying “We know what we have to do” – should do the same with the former Odeon cinema.

Then, rescind the questionable demolition vote, and hand the building over to the Bradford Odeon Rescue Group to carry out their plans for its restoration.
