The Proms and Rule Britannia, we should be proud of our history – Yorkshire Post Letters

SO, the BBC is to remove the lyrics of Land of Hope and Glory at their last 2020 Last Night of the Proms concert.

Why? Will this cleanse us all of any feeling of guilt, that we once felt a sense of pride as a nation? (Surely, Tony Blair will apologise for all of us, anyway)!

Once again, we have a small minority of people who wish to deny parts of our history, for their own agenda.

Great Britain was enslaved by the Romans after 55 BC and again in 1066 AD by the Normans (French); with the Danes and the Vikings dominating parts of our country for their own use, in between (remember ‘Dane Geld’). Don’t these people remember why the Military Canal and the Martello Towers were built, in the South of England?

To keep the French out – again – in the late 19th century!

With hindsight, we may not have encouraged the exploration of America for resources, or encouraged the Arabian Revolt in 1917, so that we had an independent source of fossil fuels.

But who doesn’t use a computer, or drive a vehicle today?

What we need to do during our lifetime is to ensure that we learn from the past, and enable and promote equality and fraternity in all peoples.
