Proud role in railway history

From: David Horncastle, Birkdale Close, Bessacarr, Doncaster.

I ENTIRELY agree with the sentiments expressed in John Woodcock’s article “Full steam ahead” (Yorkshire Post, February 5). Doncaster is missing a golden opportunity to promote its unique connection with the railway industry. At the very least, there should be a statue to Sir Nigel Gresley on the station forecourt.

As a point of interest, railway engineering designers Nigel Gresley, AH Peppercorn, OV Bulleid and plant running superintendent S. Groom were all members of Doncaster Golf Club and this fact is recorded in my centenary history which was published in 1994.

Many of us who live in Doncaster are desperately wanting the town to improve its tarnished image.

There’s an opportunity here for Doncaster to promote something special about itself that should not be missed

Cameron’s contradictions

From: Quentin Deakin, Newark Road, Crossflatts, Bingley.

THE policies of the coalition Government lay David Cameron open to accusations of hypocrisy. If he believes in integration, why is he encouraging religious groups to set up “free” schools in the academy programme?

The experience of Catholic and Protestant schools in Northern Ireland shows this to be dangerously divisive. If he wants national unity, why is he imposing cuts that are increasing unemployment and poverty while allowing the bankers and the rich to take ever more?

I, too, believe in integration. That will only come when we take religion out of education and end the gross injustice of economic inequality.
