Query over guarantee on homes liable to flood

From: J Watson, Fulford, York.

I READ with interest the article with the headline “Insurance in doubt for homes at risk of flooding” (Yorkshire Post, April 20) prompted by the Association of British Insurers.

I quote: “Thousands of homes in Yorkshire at risk of flooding are only guaranteed cover for their homes at the moment because of a deal between the insurance industry and Whitehall which is due to expire in 2013.”

The mention of Yorkshire experiencing the full devastation of flooding which hit York in 2000 prompted me to ask the question – have the insurance companies given a guarantee that the 700 homes to be built at Germany Beck in York, an area which is well-known to flood, given a guarantee that they will insure all the homes against flooding?

It would be interesting to know what the insurance companies had to say being aware of the situation at Germany Beck in Fulford, York.
