A question of survival

From: David Quarrie, Lynden Way, Acomb, York.

SEVERAL people have written in saying why the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition Government will fail and collapse, and their reasons were sound ones, but not the only factors.

For this coalition to last its full five year term (Tom Richmond, Yorkshire Post, December 31), it will have to absorb large amounts of two things which usually guarantee failure, namely tolerance and compromise.

I just cannot see either the public or the politicians accepting this.

Firm policies are vital, and these are missing here.

From: Peter Hyde, Kendale View, Driffield.

I JUST do not understand David Cameron and George Osborne giving money to Brazil when we are so short ourselves. I pay tax on an occupational pension and yet I shall see no benefit from the billions being thrown at the Olympics, nor shall I feel any of the advantages created by the high speed rail which will shave 20 minutes off a journey from Birmingham to London.

We are the first to throw money into every country’s begging bowl and yet cannot care for our aged properly.

Talk about the lunatics taking over the asylum. Clearly neither Mr Osborne or Mr Cameron have to worry about where their next crust is coming from, but they should at least look after our own before chucking money at others.

Close the gates

A QUARTER of a million English people leave the country each year to improve their lives and find work in another country, so is it necessary to “allow” that same number of immigrants to enter Britain, to look for jobs that weren’t there for the quarter million Brits who just left?

If the jobs are not there for British people, they will not be there for immigrants.

It’s simple – no jobs, so close the gates!

The benefits would be enormous – lower housing demand, less food, schools and medical services required – and clearer roads of course! Do we actually have a Customs & Excise Department?
