Rishi Sunak is betraying self-employed and freelancers – Yorkshire Post Letters

CHANCELLOR Rishi Sunak shows a total lack of understanding or care about what happens to the people who have had either no support, or little support, during the pandemic. There is no mention about extending support for self-employed people who cannot go back to their jobs because their places of work are closed.

I cannot understand what the difference is between their needs and furloughed workers’ needs.

Neither group are unemployed – they pay taxes and have jobs but cannot access them because of Covid restrictions. Those groups, together with freelancers, hourly paid zero hours contract people, are in dire straits and we will soon be seeing people homeless as they can no longer pay mortgages or rents.

The level of discrimination is appalling and should be exposed.

TORY chair Amanda Milling spent 15 years in Leeds, involved in market research – juggling numbers and mangling words (The Yorkshire Post, October 10).

A most apt apprenticeship for a foray into politics, but a visit to Leeds market would bring her closer to day to day realities.

Her urge to hold on to the North’s “blue wall” seats would be helped if she could arrange the urgent transplanting of a large number of those mysterious Southern money trees. Allegedly, they don’t exist, yet they’ve somehow managed to blossom profusely in London and the Home Counties for decades.

A ‘‘Crossrail’’ cashpoint would also be a great asset. “Another few hundred million please” – press a few buttons and out it pops. Wonderful!

I LIKE Rishi Sunak. He creates an air of positivity and encouragement without promising unattainable targets.

He is a straightforward, straight-talking politician and will most likely be able to deliver those things he has promised.

Should our Boris Johnson become fed up with his position, Mr Sunak would make an excellent Prime Minister.

EACH morning I watch three of my close family going to work at Barnsley Hospital helping to fight this deadly disease.

Then I put the television on and watch the most powerful man in the world spitting out lies. I feel as if I should be wearing a face mask just watching him.
