Rubbish mars bank holiday

From: Hilary Andrews, Wentworth Court, Nursery Lane, Leeds.

WHAT a lovely bank holiday. Everyone on the promenade at Bridlington was having a great time and bringing lots of trade into the town.

What a pity that the council couldn’t manage to find one of their workers to empty all the litter bins which were filled to capacity so litter was spilling over. No doubt the council will blame it on the cuts.

The Government seem to get the blame for everything, but surely local councils have to take some responsibility for how our council taxes are spent? Or maybe visitors could even take their own rubbish home? Is that so unthinkable?

U-boats would make us fit

From: Margaret Claxton, Arden Court, Northallerton.

MANY of your readers seem to be obsessed with food these days – obesity, waste, etc, and it seems to me there is only one solution. A fleet of U-boats.

Nothing will stop people gorging themselves if the food is there. So, if it is not there they can’t eat it. The Government could bring back rationing. We should all be slender and healthy and grow our own vegetables, which would give us all exercise, too. Just a thought.

Smaller liners are better

From: Terry Morrell, Prunus Avenue, Willerby.

I WAS not surprised to read recent letters, one from Mrs Andrews (Yorkshire Post, April 18) regarding huge cruise liners.

The sheer number of people and the need to “tender” into virtually every port and the exorbitant prices of drinks and tours make the experience awful.

However, we learnt a long time ago that there are still some good deals to be had with companies such as Fred Olsen, with their small ships providing excellent quality at reasonable prices in friendly, comfortable surroundings.
