Scottish folly is playing into hands of the EU

From: David H Rhodes, Keble Park North, Bishopthorpe, North Yorkshire.

JOHN Mason, MSP (Yorkshire Post, July 13) issues a very forceful warning to England with the ultimatum that Scotland could withdraw from the UK. This shows up his complete naivety rather than his standing as a statesman.

When the English Parliamentarian says “no” to these demands, the Scottish predicament will start to unravel. The EU will clap their hands that their dirty work of destroying our sovereignty is being done internally. They will rapidly offer help to Scotland which will boost their derring-do until the separation is complete and irrevocable. At this point Scottish influence in the EU will count as much as an opinion poll from Estonia.

Surely the time has come to dramatically slash the number of MPs and then select only those with some sensible brain power and a proven track record of running something – even a whelk store.

Could it be that we should suspend party politics for a while and as a united power run the country with UK interests first and co-operation with Europe a distant second.
