September 29: Syrian uprising not worth price in bloodshed

CAN it be that Western leaders, with only the examples of Iraq and Libya to learn from, are now prepared to let the legally- established government of Syria remain in power, in spite of it having been on the wrong side in the Cold War?

Others may have been rather quicker than them to recognise that the liberal democratic uprising in Syria, such as it was, has failed to deliver the hoped for benefits within a timescale and a cost in human lives and suffering which could remotely be considered proportionate.

In our English Civil War, most reasonable people quickly realised that stopping the fighting, or at least keeping it out of their own county, was more important than the question of which side won. Syria has long since passed that point.

WE should not be surprised at the rise of the Islamic faith in our country. I know someone who is a secretary to a Muslim doctor.

Despite his heavy workload, he still finds time to pray as per his faith and still cares deeply for his patients. Most of people originally from Christian families no longer attend church and shopping and football has become the new religion for the average.
