Shopping for famous faces

From: John Gordon, Whitcliffe Lane, Ripon.

OUR Prime Minister’s faith in individuals is quite touching. The latest is Mary Portas, the “Queen of Shops” who has been summoned from TV to solve the problems of the High Street (Jayne Dowle, Yorkshire Post, May 19) .

Jamie Oliver was assigned to cure the nation’s obesity and bring errant schoolchildren into the fold. The Cabinet does not work as a whole; it is comprised of individuals who look after the police, our health, our wars.

We know who they are because they appear every night on TV. If things go wrong, the PM pops up to say he has every faith in them. They get the blame, but the Government gets off scot-free. Is that the way to run a coalition?

Putting our pupils to shame

From: Peter R Hyde, Kendale View, Driffield, East Yorkshire.

I HAVE just returned from a holiday in the Scottish Borders. In Kelso, I watched quite a number of school pupils buying food from the bakers and other food shops.

Each pupil, after unwrapping the food, carefully placed the wrappers in the rubbish bins. There was simply not one single piece of litter thrown down.

Why can’t the same happen here?

THE news that Princess Beatrice’s admittedly rather ghastly hat has raised £81,100 for two deserving charities is very good news indeed. Now, if HRH The Duchess of Cambridge were to auction her wedding dress in aid of a couple of her favourite charities, I think that the sky would be the limit. Is there any chance?

Foul play

IS it me, or are today’s footballers more concerned with winning super-injunctions rather than medals for their actions on the field of play?
