Shun foreign food and goods to make Britain great again

From: Karl Sheridan, Selby Road, Holme on Spalding Moor, East Yorkshire.

THE recommendations by Lord Haskins with regard to ‘shorter food chain’ to ensure rogue horse meat and other contaminants entering our food chain makes absolute common sense (Yorkshire Post, April 25).

The necessary evils – being the large supermarkets – have brought the current situation of contaminated foodstuffs both on us and themselves by the continual race to be far more competitive than their rivals, constantly forcing their suppliers to cut costs otherwise lose the business.

The fact that our UK farmers produce excellent quality meat seemed to have eluded them, and only now are they deciding to buy British thanks to public condemnation – and as a result I think that should herald a
change in our buying habits as consumers.

Both this and the last government have not only blatantly allowed our manufacturing businesses to die a death through lack of forward planning, but have allowed our food producing businesses to flounder too – in fact imports on food far exceed our exports, yet once we were almost self sufficient as regards the farming and food industry.

Many years ago we had a “Back Britain” campaign with the government of the day urging us to “Buy British!” – well, quite frankly I think we ought to resurrect that campaign and begin to buy and demand items “Made in Britain”be it manufactured goods or UK home grown produce, and not only would that guarantee quality but would help our economy by providing jobs for folk.

Let’s face it, the current economic policies of the coalition are failing miserably with more and more people losing their jobs thanks to foreign imports.

Given that we have the ability, ingenuity and the labour force, I’m sure we could pull ourselves out of the recession – however until the banks stop hoarding the money that was given to them to ‘lend’ to small businesses to expand, we shall not get anywhere – and once again it seems it’s the big banks that are holding us back through greed!
