Solution exists to car dilemma

From: SB Oliver, Churchill Grove, Heckmondwike.

THERE should be no need for Altaf Sadique to buy another registration number for his car, as Terence Williams suggests (Yorkshire Post, January 19) after his number was cloned.

This would create plenty of paperwork with DVLA and insurance, for both the old and the new numbers as well as the extra cost incurred.

The police could issue him with a document of authorisation with certain security details and he could carry his Registration Certificate (log-book). His vehicle number should already be placed in the ANPR system (Automatic number-plate recognition) with a relevant message attached.

If the thief triggers one of these cameras then he will be stopped and caught eventually.

Party time?

From: Malcolm Carpenter, St Andrew Place, York.

I WONDER if in Yorkshire there will be quite the wholehearted celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee that the media suggests?

Some of us feel the time has come to think about ending the present undemocratic and privileged arrangement under which only one member of one family can become Head of State.

Our country’s history is impressive and important, but times change. Perhaps the most appropriate and lasting way to celebrate the jubilee would be to recognise this, and to move to a system fit for the 21st century?

Clock watchers

From: Stephen Nichols, Lightcliffe, Halifax.

Your article on the Metropolitan Police (Yorkshire Post, January 19) spending over £35,000 on over 110,000 calls to the speaking clock appears unbelievable. When a spokesman said there were “evidential and operational reasons for doing this”, I suppose the saying, “if you want to know the time, ask a policeman” must still have some truth in it!
