Sound of silence could pay well for shops

From: ME Wright, Grove Road, Harrogate.

I BROADLY agree with Brian Sheridan’s comments on music (Yorkshire Post, August 1), but if pop music is as respectable as he claims, why are we attacked by it in pubs, shops, restaurants – just about everywhere? Like him, I am an avid Radio 3 fan, but don’t subscribe to a Messianic urge to force everyone else to share my musical tastes; neither, I imagine, does he.

Amy Winehouse’s life and death were tragic; but I cannot mourn the loss of her voice. So far as I recall, the only time I heard it was at the dentist’s where, to my ear, it merely enhanced the mellifluence of the drill.

I’m pleased to report that Sainsbury’s has not succumbed and there are a few pubs in North Yorkshire where it is still possible to enjoy a pint and a chat without having to yell – and they are well patronised.

A local convenience store was recently refurbished and we are no longer subjected to the prattle, pop and screaming adverts of Radio Wayne.

Could this be part of a realisation that many people are more likely to linger and spend where they are not constantly doing battle with needless din?

I do hope so.
