Stop selfish students putting our health at risk – Yorkshire Post Letters

I’LL cut quickly to the chase. Higher education students are seriously becoming my single biggest annoyance, frustration and irritation during this global crisis we find ourselves in.

I’ve never been their biggest big fan, however my tolerance is being tested to the limit. I don’t like to tarnish everyone with the same brush, we are all individuals, right?

So why then do I find myself in fists of rage at the TV, the internet and the newspapers each time this group of what can only be described as irresponsible spoilt brats are given as much as a passing mention?

They openly flout the rules and guidance more than any other demographic in our society. An abhorrent lack of social distancing, reluctance to wear a face covering, general obstinate attitudes and thoughts that they are above the law confirms my thinking that these ‘covididiots’ are at the root of the reason why this virus is spreading like wild fire.

I dread to think that one day some of these so-called intellects could be holding down senior job roles across a multitude of sectors with, at best, a guilty conscience and at worst with blood on their hands.

I also hold the opinion that if this virus held a negative risk to the environment or our climate, then no doubt the same group would be out in force to remonstrate and cause as much disruption as possible.

Yet they are happy to carry on as though nothing has happened, risking human life in the process to solely satisfy their own selfish agendas.

From: Rita Leaman, President of SI Yorkshire, Scarborough.

ALL sorts of words are in regular usage in 2020, that most of us have never used before. Could my keyboard error have created another one?

I was writing to the Yorkshire women Soroptimists about ‘Communicating’ and pressed the wrong key. The word ‘Communicaring’ appeared.

I liked it and thought it summed up the importance of caring through communication. Google informed me that there is a Latin word Comminicare. It’s used as a company name by care companies working in the community around the UK.

I am adopting the word as a verb on behalf of the over 400 women service volunteers belonging to Soroptimists International (SI) of Yorkshire.

From: Peter Rickaby, Selby.

HOSPICES, by their nature, are where loved ones, both young and old, are cared for in latter stages of life, in wonderful surroundings and by dedicated loving staff.

These facilities, to survive, are dependent on charitable donations. Since Covid-19, such previously reliable income has fallen dramatically, resulting in financial difficulties. Appeals to the Treasury fall on deaf ears, yet we give billions away in overseas aid. Has common sense gone out of the window in Whitehall?

From: Paul Muller, Sandal, Wakefield.

THERE is no difference in the symptoms of the flu, or even the common cold and the Covid-19 virus, but the Covid-19 virus can be lethal for older people.

For the new NHS app to work properly, there has to be mass testing of the whole community, particularly the young without symptoms. Testing must be
done repeatedly. This is the only way to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus before we have a vaccine.

From: Peter Hyde, Driffield.

I FAIL to see what difference closing bars and restaurants at 10pm will make.

Hardened drinkers will go out earlier and then gather at other places such as homes and student digs to continue.

Government must ether close altogether or leave the pubs alone altogether. Such rules as this are confusing and useless.

YEARS ago pubs and clubs closed at 10pm and they made a living. So why are people moaning that they cannot open longer? We know times have changed and things are more expensive but, let’s be fair, at this moment in time they need to keep people safe and be grateful that they can open at all.

From: Noel Cullinlane, Rothwell.

DEATHS in England from Covid- 19 are now well over 40,000. Brexit chaos is looming in January. Yet what’s upsetting many readers (The Yorkshire Post, September 26)? Gary Lineker’s BBC wage packet!  Petty and pathetic.

From: Henry Cobden, Ilkley.

PLEASE don’t criticise all young people over Covid (Jayne Dowle, The Yorkshire Post, September 28). Those working in our supermarkets, leisure centres or as carers are setting an exemplary example.
