Sweet secrets of store success

READING of the success of Morrisons supermarkets reminds me of the time when they had a small shop in Godwin Street, Bradford, I think in the 1950s.

This was at the Darley Street end and consisted of a single aisle encircling one display unit.

At the end of the aisle near to the door sat Mrs Morrison, Ken Morrison’s mother, in charge of the till. She would say: “Come on ladies, a free jelly with every bag of sugar!”

A true entrepreneur.

THE piece “Estate agent discovers honesty is best policy” (Yorkshire Post, March 10) reminds me of the late Roy Brooks, a London estate agent, whose humorous and sometimes cynical property advertisements were published in the Sunday Times.

I DO enjoy the thoughts of the magnificently named Ruthven Urquhart. When he dies, be it “unexpectedly”, “accidentally” or, as he would wish, “reluctantly” (Yorkshire Post, March 14), I hope he will have safeguarded his letters for posterity. They will be a lovely read.
