My Sheffield care home is fighting for our residents’ lives with little support

EXCELLENT articles by Mike Padgham (The Yorkshire Post, April 18) and Chris Burn (April 20) about problems facing the social care sector, and those who cannot claim the furlough allowance.

I recognise Ministers face massive problems with Covid-19, but the articles reveal glaring gaps. While I commend the Chancellor for starting the furlough scheme quickly, did no-one in Government consider people changing jobs would fall outside the net?

Neglect of the care sector is a scandal. Shortage of protective equipment is putting care workers at serious risk. Successive governments have ignored social care funding. Attitude problems in Whitehall that look down on local government are one cause.

From: Chris Giddings, Springwood Drive, Halifax.

AS has been reported in the media recently, there is a shortage of the PPE equipment in hospitals and care homes. Why is it that news reporters and camera crews continue to film on hospital wards? They are given specialist protective gowns masks etc which further exacerbates the shortage. I do not believe it is in anyone’s interests for this irresponsible activity.
