Thanks to station staff for help in power cut

From: Matthew Whewell, Hebden Bridge.

A BIG thank you to Northern Rail and their staff.

My friend and I work in Leeds but live in Hebden Bridge.

With the problems last Thursday afternoon with the power cut causing mass cancellations around Leeds and seeing the volumes of people already there when we arrived at 5pm, we feared the worst (Yorkshire Post, July 29).

My friend is also pregnant which obviously added to her fears. Having said this, our experience, although not perfect, was fantastic.

I was surprised and pleased to see how many staff both Northern Rail and the police had on the station. It was very easy for me to speak to one member of staff and explain that my friend was pregnant and that I was worried for her and her unborn baby’s safety. We were quickly helped through the closed barriers to the mostly empty platform and were then aided to get a seat on the first train out.

I do hope that if there are any lessons to be gained about such an unprecedented situation they are learnt and I am sure there are many people who will disagree with my experience.

Nevertheless, I strongly feel that Northern Rail dealt very well with the exceptional circumstances they found themselves in and should be applauded.
