Thinking of UK is not ‘racist’

From: Geoffrey Thorpe, Lister Avenue, East Bowling, Bradford.

DURING the Conservative Party conference, Michael Heseltine accused Ukip of following a ‘racist’ agenda (Words of the Week, Yorkshire Post, October 5).

During the last election campaign, Gordon Brown, accused a voter in Lancashire of being a bigot for daring to mention immigration.

Why do MPs go down the racist line when people are thinking about Britain? Michael Heseltine does not live in an inner-city area that is crowded with immigrants, and also he has no idea how hard it is to cope financially.

Time for change

From: Mr SB Oliver, Churchill Grove, Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire.

DAVID Quarrie is quite right about the worsening of quality and format with BBC TV’s Question Time (Yorkshire Post, October 3).

David Dimbleby’s chairmanship is quite atrocious for many reasons. He acts and behaves as if he were another panellist and interrupts and bullies some of the others. On last Thursday’s programme, Yvette Cooper was first to speak on the first question and she had only been speaking for barely 40 seconds when Dimbleby interrupted her and fired about four or five questions at her.

Dimbleby has the most annoying habit of going to the audience for comments before all the panellists have spoken on any question.

The BBC needs to refresh Question Time and start by getting a new chairperson who behaves correctly. Peter Sissons was a much better chairman.

Justice in dock

From: BJ Cussons, Curly Hill, Ilkley.

FOLLOWING Bill Carmichael’s column (Yorkshire Post, October 4), the question is this: “Do readers believe that punishment adequately fits the crime in today’s courts?”
