THE comings and goings at Welcome to Yorkshire rather illustrate the problems concerning the tourism sector where the elected decision-makers are driven
by the thoughts of various partnerships and consultants rather than viable solutions.

The Northern Powerhouse produced a five-point plan which might provide an environment for economic growth in the same way that a fisherman throws in the bait in the hope of catching a fish.

In the same vein, the report last week from yet another economic quango rather suggested that tourism could be stimulated by creating a sort of “fat-free”, greener offer in the hope that the visitors might be on a diet.

Both of these suggestions might be better than Welcome to Yorkshire’s insistence that inviting Lycra-clad cyclists to block the roads to be watched by largely Yorkshire people was somehow good for the long-term economy. This was rather disproved by Harrogate and Scarborough.

Could we please close the book on Welcome to Yorkshire, cease the constant bailouts using public money and invest in those who have more experience of this sector, as illustrated in your July 4 edition?

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
