Time for a Yorkshire Churchill to save country

From: Maureen Hunt, Woolley, near Wakefield.

I WAS delighted to read the letter from Gerald Sayer (Yorkshire Post, March 30). He was one of the two young men who volunteered with my late husband, Maxwell, to join the Royal Artillery in 1941. They were sent out to India and thence to Burma, all three returning unscathed in 1946.

Gerry’s paternal grandfather was editor of the Yorkshire Post from 1895 to 1905.

Gerry, having lived in many parts of the country, has always been able to obtain our newspaper, which seems quite a remarkable feat.

In his letter, he points out that William Hague is “wrongly employed”. We have thought for many years that he is the Churchill waiting in the wings to rescue our country from total disaster – possibly another Socialist government. It won’t be easy for him to contemplate leadership of the Conservative party again.

On the last occasion he suffered completely uncalled for criticism of his personal appearance, which was beyond belief. I remember only too well being appalled and sickened by an interview on television when Mr Hague was not present but was the subject of derision and unchecked, unbridled mockery. He would have needed the hide of a rhinoceros to cope with it.

However, if he possesses the qualities of Churchill he will be able to put his country first, whatever the consequences. And, perhaps, just what we need in Number 10 is a Yorkshireman with sound common sense – a man of the people who will listen to the electorate.
