Tolerance and minorities

From: David W Wright, Easingwold, North Yorkshire.

THE latest predictable media hype about the lack of ethnic minorities in the Midsomer Murders TV programme, and the remarks made by its producer, simply show how the political correctness industry and its supporters are determined to force their minority views on to our over-tolerant society.

The two recent comment features made by Liz Walker and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation authors (Yorkshire Post, March 16 and 17) are full of rhetoric but short on common sense and failing to acknowledge that multi-culturalism has failed because of the failure of many ethnic minorities to integrate into our society.

Protection for the police

SO the poor police officer is to be left with little or no protection. The idea of not jailing people who assault police officers leaves then open to assault by all and sundry. As a young constable in the 1950s, I had every confidence walking the streets of Hull at all times of night and day.

Those given to violence knew well that if they struck a police officer they faced a certain prison sentence of at least three months and a second like offence earned them a 12-month sentence from the Stipendiary Magistrate.

Not only are we reducing the police presence on our streets but we are exposing them to unnecessary risk of attack by the yobs we ecpect them to protect us from. I am disgusted.

I AM impressed by your report that a dog brought to Yorkshire from France only responds to commands in French and only in the poiite form “vous”, as in “Reposez-vous” (Yorkshire Post, March 16). We dogs in Ripon think he’s getting a bit above himself and we shall have something to say if he ever comes to our field.
