Tories have only insults to offer

SOME rich people, including David Cameron, say poor people “lack aspiration”.

This trite observation shows the toffs have not seriously researched long-term poverty.

It also shows they lack compassion and common courtesy. Cameron’s Tory Party need policies, not bad-mannered insults. Then we may stop reading of unemployed people making more than 70 job applications and not getting a reply.

FURTHER to recent letters re the “German” Christmas Market in Leeds, I, too, was very disappointed (Yorkshire Post, January 18). A couple of the stall holders I spoke to couldn’t understand German or English and I gave up trying in the end to communicate with them.

So to see and experience a real German Christmas Market I suppose you have to travel to Germany – another good reason to visit that country!

Racquet abuse

I WAS rather saddened to see Andy Murray smashing up a perfectly good racquet in the Aussie tennis tournament. There in a nutshell is your reason why he did not get a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list.

Can you imagine Sir Walter Raleigh or Sir Christopher Wren smashing up their racquets, after a disappointing game of Real Tennis?

Freely irritated

HE may not agree but a semantics issue seems to indicate a dichotomy between William Snowden and me which doesn’t exist (Yorkshire Post, January 22). We are both in favour of free speech. However, a “liberal” is entitled to be at the very least irritated by views which would seek to restrict the freedom and human rights of others, whether those views come from the extreme Right or the extreme Left.
