UK will be poorer if Scots fall for nationalists’ con trick

From: D Wood, Thorntree Lane, Goole.

AS the debate or rather lack of debate – as the detestable Alex Salmond and his even more odious deputy Nicola Sturgeon refuse to take part or listen to any opposition to their quest for Scottish independence – starts to hot up, their proposals have been exposed in the last couple of weeks for the sham that they really are.

Mr Salmond’s plans are for an “independent” Scotland that will keep Her Majesty the Queen – nothing wrong with that, who in their right mind wouldn’t want to? – keep the pound and stay in the foreign dictatorship that is the EU.

The last two wishes have been dashed by the powers that control them. The entire Westminster political spectrum has ruled out any currency union and rightly so; or otherwise these two nonentities could run up billions of pounds worth of debts and then expect the remaining countries of the UK to bail them out. An obvious non-starter.

As for the EU, the leader of this corrupt foreign dictatorship’s unelected commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, has stated that it will be almost impossible for Scotland to retain membership or re-join this failed political experiment.

There are two points that these two self-seeking egotists seem to miss, or have decided to overlook.

How on earth can Scotland be independent if the Bank of England is setting its interest rates and controlling its money supply?

And how can you be independent when you are governed by an unelected foreign dictatorship in Brussels?

Scottish independence was never mentioned until Salmond and Sturgeon formed their self-seeking little party and started claiming that the Scots are victims of English oppression.

They have no real viable plan and the fact that they want to keep the pound and stay in the EU proves that this is just a huge con trick to gain more power and prestige for themselves, and nothing to do with improving the lot of the Scottish people.

As a pro-Unionist, I think the majority of Scots are far too sensible to be conned by this dastardly duo and will remain loyal to the world’s greatest ever and most successful union. The whole of the UK will be the poorer if Scotland leave, but especially the Scottish people.

MANY people in this country are beginning to feel ashamed of our politicians. We voted for them to represent our views, that is not how it feels any more.

We have enjoyed having our good neighbours in Scotland. We are proud of what they have achieved, in times of peace and war, and they make us feel so welcome when we visit their country.

Politicians on both sides of the border have started shouting threats at each other. They should be working out what can be agreed to make our countries more compatible. How can it benefit either to break up such a long standing relationship?

I DO not want Scotland to leave the UK. If both the Labour Party and the Conservatives think it is a bad idea for England Wales and Northern Ireland to be in
a currency union with
an independent Scotland,
why did we have a currency union with the Irish Free state and Irish Republic for over fifty years?

Of course it is in the interest of those of us in England to have a currency union with an independent Scotland. It allows for easier trade.

WHY the obsession with David Bowie making an appeal to Scotland to vote against independence (George McManus, Yorkshire Post, February 25)?

He didn’t actually say the
words attributed to him – he
got a super-model to say them
on his behalf.

This is too important a matter to be left to celebrities.
