WELL, well, well, who would have thought it? Five of our very own Yorkshire MPs have been attempting to spread the virus of ‘‘fake news’’ to The Yorkshire Post, not by a lack of distancing or mask wearing but by a process of intimidation of the Editor.

My family are long-time readers and subscribers and the worrying letter to readers by James Mitchinson (The Yorkshire Post, January 23) has certainly reinforced in our minds the reason why. The Yorkshire Post has always offered well balanced, well researched journalism (such as that presented by Robyn Vinter) and does not seek to embellish or sensationalise the facts. For that reason, this very worthy publication has acquired a well-deserved reputation for truth and trustworthiness among its readers.

Quite unlike our five unworthy Yorkshire MPs apparently! It is beyond belief that they, aided and abetted by our somewhat hapless Vaccines Minister, should attempt to manipulate the truth with regard to the diversion of vaccine supplies from Yorkshire to other regions.

As they should well know,
for many of us in this great region – and particularly in
West and South Yorkshire – we have had little to celebrate since the start of the pandemic, with local lockdowns largely filling
the gaps between the national ones.

Yorkshire, along with many other regions in the North, desperately needed something to stop its inhabitants feeling like the nation’s lepers and to demonstrate that, for once, we were ahead of the game. Our logistically excellent vaccine roll-out by dedicated, hard-working staff, has provided that very welcome boost to morale.

It cannot be denied that it is disappointing, if not annoying that, according to some number cruncher in the seat of power, we appear to be doing rather
too well in Yorkshire and therefore have to be held back (punished?) by restricted vaccine supplies until other regions catch up.

If only such equality among the regions (or should I use the current buzz-phrase of ‘levelling up’?) could be so arbitrarily extended to other, more mundane, matters.

With great justification, the Editor heads his letter ‘‘Is it too much to ask for politicians to be honest with us?” It is patently clear that it is.

There is, however, one question which perplexes me. Why was it so very important to hide the truth from us that it warranted threats to the freedom of the press from MPs in our – their – own region?
