Vote over future of heart unit

From: R Hanson, Swallow Lane, Golcar, Huddersfield.

YOU reported (Yorkshire Post, June 15) that MPs are to get a vote over the threatened closure of the child heart unit in Leeds.

Who has granted MPs a three-hour debate followed by a vote as to whether to halt the whole review about closing children’s heart units?

What if there is a majority vote in favour of halting the review but the Government takes no notice as the vote is not binding? The issue is too important to sweep under the carpet.

No way to run a rail road

From: ME Wright, Grove Road, Harrogate.

ON a recent expensive and frustrating train journey, the interminable and gabbled announcements informed me that stations are now “calling points”.

I arrived at Harrogate “calling point”, one-and-a-half hours late, fuming over how many pinstripe suits received bonuses for dreaming up that useless wheeze.

Could said suits be the same ones who regard “the right tie” as a vital part of running a railway (Yorkshire Post, June 16)?

Perhaps, if they concentrated on bringing the current costly, fragmented shambles up to mainland European standards, staff would wear their company ties as a matter of pride; they can hardly be expected to do this as things stand.

Ordeal of dogs in car

From: C Balmer, Victoria Gardens, Hull.

WITH reference to the letter from J Smith and the four dogs left in a hot car (Yorkshire Post, June 7), his concern is, of course, understandable. It is a crime, distressing to both animals and humans.

An emergency call to the RSPCA and/or the police would have been justified, although they might not be able to attend directly.

Rocking a vehicle gently often sets off an alarm, bringing the offender(s) running back to it.
