Way to tranquil, undisturbed life

PERHAPS I should have been born in the 19th century, as I freely admit to having no desire to do any tweeting, twittering, facebooking, messaging, e-(by gum) mailing or any other variety of “internetting” for want of a better word.

Furthermore, I regularly thank God for the tranquil and undisturbed life granted me by my refusal to conform to the ways of this frighteningly fast and increasingly intrusive modern world.

However, I still enjoy the old-fashioned art of letter writing and, indeed, you are good enough to publish some of my modest offerings.

Premium rip-off on GPs’ phones

SURELY those GP surgeries that still use premium-rate phone lines (Tom Richmond, Yorkshire Post, October 5) should have a duty to write to their patients and inform them when a new local-rate landline is introduced to reduce charges?

Expecting people to search on the internet is not good enough – most people just keep their GP’s number by the phone in case of an emergency.

What became of free thinking?

Whatever happened to the 
old-fashioned idea that academics should approach 
their disciplines with an open mind rather than one tainted by pre-conceived political ideas?
