We need BBC more than ever after Brexit – Yorkshire Post Letters

READERS such as Ron Firth need reminding that the BBC was only bounced into taking on free licence fees for over-75s by George Osborne and his austerity welfare cuts (The Yorkshire Post, July 16).

Austerity has been abandoned and so if we still want over-75 licences to be a universal benefit – not a means-tested one –maybe it is time for the Government to pick up the tab again.

With us leaving the European Union, we need institutions that project modern Britain positively and effectively to the rest of the world. Probably none is better at that and as well-regarded internationally as the BBC. It is a bad time to undermine it.

Is the TV licence still justified or not?Is the TV licence still justified or not?
Is the TV licence still justified or not?

IT was very interesting to note that our secular BBC stopped broadcasting their Sunday services the weekend that football matches were resumed. To add insult to injury, we are informed that the elderly will no longer qualify for free TV but must pay the standard licence fee.

It would seem that this will enable the powers-that-be at the Beeb to waste even more money on football. Apart from the news, which often seems politically biased, I find very little of interest on BBC TV any more.

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
